Hoe duur was de suiker is a Dutch film (2013) and series (2014) on the former slavery in the former Dutch colony of Suriname . The story is based on the novel by Cynthia McLeod . Initially it will be a mini-series, but it was decided during production to bring out the title as film.
The film went on Wednesday, September 25th, 2013 premiere as the opening film of it Dutch Film Festival .
The series was shown in February and March 2014 at the VARA . The first broadcast took place on Saturday, February 8th, 2014 in Netherlands 2 . The series uses the same images in the movie, but the series has over an hour of extra footage.
The Price Of Sugar tells the alternately gripping, romantic and heart-wrenching story of Sarith and Mini-Mini as they grow up on the sugar plantations of Suriname in the latter half of the eighteenth century. Where Sarith is the most beautiful woman in the colony, the mulatto Mini-Mini is forever in her shadow, slave to her own half-sister.
